Tim “Timbali” Cornwell is a world-renowned percussionist with over 54 years of experience in the music industry. A self-taught virtuoso, Timbali’s artistry has been shaped by years of dedicated study under legendary instructors such as Baba Oloya Adelyamo and Markalino Diamond, among others, refining a percussive style that is both technically masterful and emotionally resonant.

Timbali began his career in Cincinnati, where he quickly became a sought-after studio musician, contributing his talents to renowned R&B artists such as Midnight Star, The Whispers, and Carrie Lucas. His work extended across numerous jingles and jazz recordings, establishing him early on as a versatile and dynamic force in the studio.

In 1988, driven by an unwavering passion for growth, Timbali relocated to Los Angeles to pursue broader musical horizons. Within a year, he earned the prestigious role of percussionist for Janet Jackson’s iconic Rhythm Nation tour—a career-defining moment he views as a benchmark for modern percussionists. As the music industry shifted toward electronic soundscapes, Timbali evolved with it, blending traditional rhythms with cutting-edge electronic textures to deliver a bold and innovative live performance experience.

His contribution to the musical landscape spans more than a thousand recordings across genres, and his ability to elevate every project has earned him the admiration of peers and producers alike. As acclaimed producer Babyface once said, “When I feel the music is just right, Timbali always makes it feel better.”

In addition to his performance career, Timbali has also made his mark as a producer for major record labels and film projects. His collaborations include over 300 platinum-selling artists, solidifying his place as a rare and uniquely gifted musician.

Timbali’s select credits include work with artists such as Wayman Tisdale, Paul Taylor, the Four Tops, Mary J. Blige, Aretha Franklin, Earth, Wind & Fire, Diddy, Toni Braxton, Martina McBride, Chaka Khan, James Taylor, Stevie Wonder, Smokey Robinson, John Legend, Big & Rich, Dr. Dre, 2Pac, Patti LaBelle, Mary Mary, Snoop Dogg, Diana Ross, Janet Jackson, The O'Jays, Charlie Wilson, and Chris Brown.

His legacy continues at The DOA Academy of the Arts, where he brings a lifetime of wisdom, authenticity, and rhythm to the next generation of percussionists.
