Derek’s musical journey began at the young age of five when he discovered his love for the bass guitar, an interest that grew as he toured with local gospel quartets at just eight years old. His high school years in the jazz band laid the foundation for a career that would take him to new heights. In 1985, Derek moved to Los Angeles in pursuit of a professional music career, and his big break came in 1987 when he was asked to play bass on the TV series Sidekicks, alongside El DeBarge. This pivotal moment propelled him into the spotlight, and soon he was touring with some of the biggest names in the industry, including The Calloway Brothers, Karyn White, TLC, New Edition, Bobby Brown, and The Time. In 1989-1990, he became a key player on Janet Jackson's record-breaking Rhythm Nation tour. Derek’s career reached new heights in 1991 when he signed a publishing deal directly with Michael Jackson's ATV Music and soon earned his first song placement, "College Girl," with Bobby Brown.

In 2001, after years of touring with musical giants like Lionel Richie, Derek made a bold decision to retire from the road and dedicate himself full-time to songwriting and producing. His career flourished, creating timeless melodies and arrangements.
