Marcus Phillips is an accomplished bassist, producer, and touring artist hailing from the rich cultural landscape of the San Francisco Bay Area. Born and raised in San Francisco, Marcus discovered his passion for music at an early age, nurtured by his upbringing in his grandfather’s church. Surrounded by soulful harmonies and spiritual rhythm, he learned to play multiple instruments before ultimately falling in love with the bass guitar—a connection that would shape the trajectory of his musical journey.
Known for his deep groove, musical sensitivity, and electrifying live performances, Marcus has become one of the most sought-after bassists in the industry. His career has taken him across the globe, performing and recording with an impressive roster of celebrated artists, including Leela James, Ledisi, Goapele, Dave Hollister, Eric Benét, Avant, Mary Mary, Tina Campbell, Anita Wilson, Tony! Toni! Toné!, E-40, DJ Quik, Eric Roberson, Mike Phillips, Keyshia Cole, Joe, Fantastic Negrito, Jennifer Hudson, and Kelly Clarkson—to name a few.
Marcus currently serves as the touring bassist for Grammy-nominated soul icon Kem, bringing his signature sound and dynamic stage presence to audiences around the world. Whether in the studio, on stage, or mentoring the next generation of musicians, Marcus Phillips continues to elevate the art of bass playing with authenticity, passion, and purpose.
