Eric "Pik Funk" Smith's journey into the world of music began at a very young age, influenced by the sounds that filled his home. The first instrument he ever touched was a drum set that was often played by his father and older brother. Growing up in a musically rich environment, Eric quickly developed an interest in rhythm and melody. However, it was the bass guitar that truly captivated him, and he soon found himself playing alongside his father in church, where his passion for music began to flourish.

 

From childhood, Eric was singularly focused on his love for music—it was one of the few things that truly spoke to him. His natural talent and dedication led him to earn the nickname "Pik Funk" due to his signature playing style. Using a guitar pick to play funky, groove-driven bass lines, he developed a unique sound that set him apart from other musicians. It was clear from the start that music would be more than just a hobby for Eric—it would be his life's calling.

 

Eric's first major professional gig came when he was invited to play bass for the legendary Sheila E., a defining moment that opened up an entirely new world for him. This experience not only helped him hone his skills but also introduced him to the wider music scene, where he would go on to collaborate with some of the biggest names in the industry. Over the years, Eric has had the privilege of working with artists such as Lalah Hathaway, Rihanna, Janet Jackson, Fantasia, Justin Timberlake, P. Diddy, Destiny’s Child, Jamie Foxx, Babyface, Jill Scott, Goapele, Mary Mary, and many more.

 

Eric’s musical talent has allowed him to perform for hundreds of thousands of fans around the globe, leaving an indelible mark on the international music scene. His versatility as a bassist, combined with his ability to adapt to various genres—from R&B and soul to pop and funk—has made him a sought-after collaborator for artists across a wide spectrum of musical styles.
